About nick sims

  

Nick currently works as VP of Allocations and Grants at a non-profit organization, overseeing processes to distribute over $25 million in funding annually. He has worked for the same agency for over a decade, previously serving as VP of Community Initiatives (2016-2024), where he managed direct services focused on early education, health, financial stability, and access to services. 


 He was elected to his first term on the Homewood City Council in October 2020, and is seeking re-election in the revised Council-Manager form of government. As a current member of Council, he serves on the Public Works, Planning and Development, and Special Issues (Chair) committees. He also serves as liaison to the Beautification Board. During his term, he has been selected as a member of Smart Growth America’s Champions Institute (2023), and named to the Leadership Birmingham Class of 2024.  


Other relevant experience includes:

  • Planner, Jefferson Co. Commission; Dept. of Land Planning & Development Services (2008 – 2011)
  • Certified Facilitator by the National Charrette Institute (2011)
  • Director, Safe Routes to School (2012-2015) 
  • Alabama State Coordinator, Action for Healthy Kids (2014-2016)
  • Chair, Alabama Obesity Task Force (2016-18)
  • Executive Board, Jefferson County Collaborative for Health Equity (2015-2020) 
  • Safe Routes to School Local Leaders Advisory Committee (National) 
  • Morris Fund Grant Recipient to attend Walkable Cities Conference at Harvard University (2023) 
  • Smart Growth America Champions Institute (invited to present to the Massachusetts Dept. of Transportation in Feb 2025)


Nick holds a B.A. in Economics from the University of South Alabama (2001), and earned an MPA from UAB in 2007, specializing in Community Development and Planning. While studying at UAB, he served as President of the MPA Student Association, a Senator of the UAB Graduate Student Association, and was named 2007 Student of the Year by the UAB MPA Alumni Association.


Volunteer activities include:   

  • Board Member, Friends of Rickwood (America’s Oldest Ballpark)(2010 – 2017)
  • Executive Committee of Deer Valley Elementary PTO, Head of Deer Valley Dads (2013-2014)
  • Committee Head, Sidewalk Film Festival (Various)
  • Youth Sports Coach in baseball, soccer, and basketball (2012-2024)


Nick and his wife, Stacey Davis, live in Edgewood and have two sons -- Jackson, a rising 3rd grader at Edgewood Elementary, and Charlie, a graduate of the Homewood High School class of 2025. Nick enjoys playing soccer and coaching youth sports.
